Gerd & Gastroenterologist Treatment

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the medical name for reflux, which is also known as acid reflux or heartburn. Reflux occurs when acid from food and liquid frequently flows back up from your stomach into your throat. This can irritate the lining of your throat and cause discomfort in the chest.

While many people may experience heartburn periodically, GERD is mild acid reflux that occurs at least twice a week. In other cases, it is moderate to severe reflux that occurs at least once a week.

Common Symptoms of Gerd

Signs and symptoms of GERD may include (Reflux symptoms and conditions can occur at any age):

  • Burning sensation in either the back of the throat, in the middle of the chest, or behind the breastplate (usually after eating and generally worsens at night)
  • Chest pains
  • Acid taste in mouth
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • Difficulty swallowing

Diagnosis and Treatment for Gerd

TrendHealth Clinic provides comprehensive GERD treatment in Tomball. For starters, we recommend lifestyle changes to help reduce or eliminate reflux, including not drinking alcohol, eating too close to bedtime, and being overweight. Also, we can work with you to determine if certain foods may trigger your GERD symptoms, such as chocolate, caffeine, peppermints, and greasy, spicy, and acidic foods.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, treatment may not be necessary. Over-the-counter medicine is often effective for treating mild cases of reflux, including antacids, H-2 receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors.

For moderate to severe cases of reflux, we may prescribe a prescription version of H-2 receptor blockers or proton pump inhibitors. Other types of medicine may help treat GERD, including medication to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter or help empty your stomach faster. In some cases, surgery may be required to treat reflux, especially when medicine doesn’t help, or a long-term solution is required.
