Diabetes Care Treatment & Management Tomball

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your body doesn’t make or use the hormone insulin properly. It causes too much blood glucose (sugar) to build up in the blood. There are 2 main types of diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce any insulin. It is sometimes called “juvenile diabetes” because it is usually discovered in children and teenagers, but it may appear in adults, too.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use the insulin as it should. In the past, doctors thought that only adults were at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, an increasing number of children in the United States are now being diagnosed with the disease, due to children being overweight or obese and are less physically active.

Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, but not high enough to officially be diagnosed as diabetes. Pre-diabetes greatly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes symptoms vary in severity and frequency from person to person. Common signs and symptoms of early stage diabetes may include:

  • Extreme hunger and thirst
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent skin, gum, bladder, or yeast infections
  • Fatigue
  • Dry, itchy skin

Common signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes may include:

  • Insulin resistance
  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol problems
  • Darkening skin around the neck or in the armpits
  • Yeast infections
  • Absent or skipped menstrual periods in teen girls or women

When Type 2 diabetes gets worse, it can cause damage to the eyes, nerves, blood vessel, and kidneys.  It is best if the symptoms above are checked early on to ensure it is not diabetes.

Diagnosis & Treatment for Diabetes

TrendHealth Clinic provides comprehensive diabetes management services in Tomball. After a thorough examination, we will test you for diabetes if we feel you are at risk. These tests will check your glucose or blood sugar levels.

While diabetes cannot be cured, our diabetes treatment center can help you manage it so you can live a long and healthy life. We recommend the following treatments for diabetes:

  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Weight control
  • Medication to help control diabetes
  • Insulin treatment

For many patients, diabetes can be controlled with significant weight loss, diet changes, and regular exercise. We will consult and monitor your progress. If that doesn’t successfully manage your diabetes and lower your glucose levels, we will prescribe medication and then continue to monitor your progress. Success of a treatment plan centers around following a blood value called the A1c or glycohemoglobin. Together, we can check this number regularly and adjust your medication and treatment until good control of glucose is achieved.
